When can an airline require passengers to buy extra seats for their service animals?

Question: When can an airline require passengers to buy extra seats for their service animals?

Answer: An airline won’t require a passenger to purchase an extra seat unless the animal will not fit in the immediate seating area, lap, or under-seat storage area of the passenger. For example, a Great Dane might be denied cabin space unless an additional seat is purchased. However, if the flight happens has a lot of space available, the passenger may not purchase as additional seat.
