The COVID-19 pandemic has made a lot of people miss the outdoors and other natural wonders. With that, visitation to the Grand Canyon is expected to rise as life slowly goes back to normal. But officials are urging hikers not to take their dogs with them. Here are reasons why:
It’s illegal - Pets aren’t allowed below the canyon’s rim. That includes emotional support animals with the exclusion of service dogs.
Trail paths and weather are hot and rough - Dogs don’t wear shoes so their paws will get burned during a hike. They are also prone to overheating under hot weather.
Hikes can be too long - Our beloved animals aren’t like us. While they are energetic at home, they aren’t as persevering as us when it comes to descending and ascending the canyon.
There are other people and animals - Some people won’t react well to the sight of your furry friend and vice versa. Dogs aren’t also fond of wild animals in the canyon such as coyotes, mules, sheep, and squirrels.
