A Worthwhile Struggle: Looking After 400 Animals

The Taronga Zoo Wildlife Hospital looks after 4000 animals. Despite staffed by 17 people on a hectic schedule, the job is still rewarding. The challenge of a wide variety of tasks makes the place amazing to work in, said Dr. Larry Vogelnest. Their knowledge of treating domesticated animals evolve to face problems and conditions that nobody else has seen before. Because of this, they have been known throughout other zoos locally and overseas. These zoos often contact them seeking advice.

“It is a rollercoaster, one day it can be really exciting - like a birth or a release - but not all are happy days; sometimes it can be about dealing with ill animals or something that’s come in that you cannot save. You can plan the day but that can quickly go out the window,” said Libby Hall, the hospital manager. After treating animals, they release them into the wild with trackers. The reason for this is because they conduct studies and research which they consider to be the job’s icing of the cake.
