Alpaca Care Helps With Mentally-Troubled German Convicts

At the Mainkofen Psychiatric Hospital in Bavaria, looking after a small Alpaca herd is used as therapy for convicts with mental-issues. The therapy’s purpose is to help the patients develop social skills for societal reintegration.

One of the patients, Erwin Meier - named changed for confidentiality purposes, has been taking care of the Alpacas since October last year. Part of the Alpaca herd-caring tasks are cleaning their stables, walking them around, brushing their coats, and dressing their wounds.

"I used to get angry quite quickly, I was impulsive, but it's improved thanks to the animals because if I get angry, they get angry too, and the calmer I am, the calmer they are too," Said Meier.
