Along with more than a hundred Americans left in Afghanistan, there are also military contract dogs that have been abandoned in Kabul. It’s important to note that contract working dogs are not owned by the Department of Defense as they are only hired to do jobs like bomb-sniffing.
All military dogs owned by the DoD are now home as of now. A photo circulating on social media of dogs in carriers are under the care of the Kabul Small Animal Rescue - an organization founded by Charlotte Maxwell-Jones, an American.
As animal lovers, we can only hope that the US government would put an effort to rescue these pooches in the next evacuation mission. One way to do so is to make an appeal to congress to classify and treat the contract working dogs as equal to the DoD’s military working dogs.
