Joining Tony Doucette in the Windsor Morning, Anthrozoology professor Beth Daly answered several questions about service animals and their presence in school. Here were some of the things discussed:
The uses of service animals: Service animals help with many things, from opening and closing doors for disabled people, to providing comfort to those with autism.
Service animals in classroom settings: School boards may question the need for service animals since people can do their job. Yet, a disabled child may feel most comfortable asking a service animal for help.
Considerations when creating policies: School boards need to think about some important things such as the fear of animals, allergies, and more. Boards must ensure fairness for everyone in the classroom - kids with and without a service animal.
