How a Rescue Dog Changed This Ph.D. Studentā€™s Life

Chicha was an abandoned puppy that got hit by a truck eight years ago when Dr. Martin Garcia Cartagena found her. With displaced vertebrae and a paralyzed back legs, Dr. Cartagena was concerned that Chicha would never have the same quality of life other dogs have. After surgery and multiple X-rays and tests, Chicha was able to walk again with the assistance of cart and wheels. Dr. Cartagena brought Chicha with him to New Zealand to pursue his Ph.D. in Resource and Environmental Planning at Massey University. Leaving her in Uruguay was never an option, as the 36-year-old doctor Cartagena said, “I couldn't do a lot of things without her.”
