How Assistance Dogs Help Those With Autism

There are different types of assistance dogs with each training that caters to every individual’s special needs. For service dogs, they can help by stopping their owners from entering seizure-inducing environments and have rights to enter public spaces.

Therapy dogs don’t have the same rights to enter public places but they are trained to be calm in new places and calm their owners in stressful situations. For example, if the person with autism has entered a public area and is having a panic attack, the therapy dog will get closer to the person for them to hug and calm down.

Emotional support dogs are more kept to help people with less-severe autism symptoms like developing social skills but can also perform the duties therapy dogs do. They aren’t certified by the Americans with Disabilities Act but can be vouched by doctors or licensed therapists for individuals who need emotional support.
