Three weeks ago Paula Andropoulos went to a pet shop in Norwood, Johannesburg. She was determined to look for a cure on something that ailed her - lockdown fatigue without a direction. The cure that she was looking for wasn’t a drug or something that adults would normally use.
It was a hamster. A ball of fur with fat cheeks and a huge appetite. It was something she could focus on and indulge in without the risk of being hurt. Or “Something I could look after without incurring enormous expense, or irrevocably altering the conveniently plastic quality of my existence,” as she said.
She is going back to her usual self. The trip to the pet shop and the hamster she got is her proof.
