Residents of Marquette, Michigan, are surprised to be greeted with a sign saying, “NO DOGS PERMITTED IN PARK EXCEPT IN ENCLOSED VEHICLES,” as they walk along the sunny Lakeshore Boulevard. This is because there have been a lot of complaints about dogs being in off-limit areas like nature preserves and lifeguarded beaches.
Officer John Waldo, who serves as Marquette City Police Department’s K-9 handler, said, “We understand that people have really good control of their dogs. But if the dog has an interaction with another dog or wildlife, there’s no way to take any positive control. Your normally friendly, obedient dog can become less obedient and be in a potentially dangerous situation.”
The rule, however, doesn’t apply to ADA-approved service animals. To know more about the city ordinance for responsible dog ownership, click this link.
