Pet Ownership is Key to a Happier and Longer Life

People aged 50 and older are the ones who benefit the most from dog companionship. Seniors experience loneliness and having a furry friend around decreases the risk of anxiety and depression.

There are many studies that demonstrate that when humans interact with dogs, they feel calmer due to the release of oxytocin, a feel-good hormone. Linda Handlin, a Swedish researcher, was also able to explain that the bond between a woman and dog when they interact is similar to the bond between a mother and child.

When it comes to therapy dogs, yes, they provide calm to their handlers. For example, Sarina Light is diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Because she has a therapy dog, Sunny, she feels more at ease. She also takes Sunny to Madison Heights Older Adult Center each week to bring joy to the seniors.

Overall, dogs improve our quality of life.
