Service dogs assist people in many ways depending on what they’re trained to do. When it comes to veterans, can you guess what their most important task is? The answer is disrupting anxiety. A lot of veterans live with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), a mental health problem that people develop after experiencing traumatic events.
Kerri Rodriguez, Ph.D, says that service dogs that are trained to assist with PTSD can wake a veteran from nightmares, alert him to anxiety, and be a reliable companion in crowds. She adds, “It’s not uncommon to hear veterans talk about how they wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for their service dog, or how their service dog has allowed them to become a husband and father again.”
