Signs That Your Pet or Assistant Animal is in Pain

September is National Animal Pain Awareness Month. As Dr. Cynthia Maro experiences, a lot of pet owners she encounters ask, “How can I tell if my pet is in pain?” To answer that question, here are a few signs of animals experiencing pain:

  • Being less social from you and visitors like hiding.
  • Decreased activity by sleeping a lot.
  • Hesitation to go up and down stairs or jumping onto surfaces.
  • Change in normal posture or gait - showing lameness.
  • Changes in bathroom habits like pottying in no-go areas.
  • Change in behavior - starts to be aggressive for no reason.
  • Refusal to go for walks - pulls the leash back.
  • Over-grooming areas on the body to the point of injury.
  • Skipping or refusing meals - doesn’t come when called for meals.
