Startup Focuses on the Possibility to Train Bees in Detecting COVID-19

Honeybees have a keen sense of smell. They can smell nectar in plants at a distance even if the amount is small. And scientists have used this sensitivity to detect and diagnose diseases. Through classical conditioning, honeybees can be trained to detect COVID-19 in humans.

A startup called InsectSense has partnered with a department at the Wageningen University in the Netherlands to focus on this endeavor. The bees in the experiments were given a sugar solution as a reward if they extended their tongues on a q-tip laced with COVID-19.

This could help medical and health authorities save plenty of time and money for testing people and animals. It’s because the bees can detect the virus quickly and training doesn’t cost much.
