The Pet Effect: Why is the Thought Rapidly Spreading?

Psychotherapist Dana Dorfman is a believer in The Pet Effect - the thought which suggests that getting a pet will make you happier and healthier. She is not alone in this as she has written, “A preponderance of evidence supports the contention that pets affect our overall health—mental and physical.” However, Psychology Today Blogger Marc Bekoff disagrees as he says, “The preponderance of the evidence does not support the hype about the curative powers of companion animals.”

So why are the “studies and evidence” of links between owning pets and human health more popular? And why is there no attention to contradictions on the health benefits of owning pets? As Hal Herzog, Ph.D. points out, nobody wants to write and read about these “Bad News” articles.
